If you love the Douge de Bordeauxwe know why. Living with the Bordeaux has changed our lives. The Bordeaux is a former fighting dog now excellent guard dog that protects the home with courage, but not aggression.
Not one given to barking without a good reason. The Bordeaux is a gentle, calm, sensitive dog that forms a strong bond with his owner and is very affectionate with children. They will willingly accept other household pets if introduced to them when young.
This breed detests solitude as they associate separation from their family as punishment. They are very much house dogs but need outside time also. A couple hours of activity a day should do.
Early socialization and obedience training is a must for this breed. If you are unwilling or unable to accomplish this early and ongoing socialization and training this breed is not for you.
The Bordeaux, like the Bulldog, have their own health challenges and health issues. They are not known for their long life or good hips/elbows. When purchasing a Bordeaux even from the best of breeders they are STILL a Bordeaux with a history of poor health because of breeding practices. I have found the more beautiful the dog usually the more health problems they have.
